7:15pm — Cameron Jacoby: Implementing the Web Speech API for Voice Data Entry

We live in a world where you can schedule a meeting by talking to your watch or turn off your lights by asking Alexa as if she were your roommate. But would voice dictation work for something more intensive, like a web app used for hours of data entry?

In this talk, I’ll show you how to implement the Web Speech API in a few simple steps. I’ll also walk through a case study of using the API in a production Rails app. You’ll leave with an understanding of how to implement voice dictation on the web as well as criteria to evaluate if voice is a viable solution to a given problem.

7:45pm — Julian Fahrer: Deploying stuff and such

Capistrano is an awesome tools that can be used without fully understanding its inner mechanics and subtleties. Copying examples and use cases can get you very far, maybe even through your initial setup! However, you’ll get the most value out of Capistrano when you dig deeper. This talk gives you an overview of Capistrano with real life examples on how to deploy code and more. It shows you what Capistrano is, what it is not, and how to make the most of it. You will find this talk helpful whether you want start using Capistrano or just understand it better.

8:15-9:00pm — More hanging out and talking to nice people

Speakers

Cameron Jacoby is a Software Engineer at Stitch Fix, where she builds internal tools in Ruby on Rails. She found coding by way of Merchandising, while working at Stitch Fix on the Jewelry & Accessories team in 2014. After attending General Assembly’s web development immersive program, Cameron is now working on the tools that once made her job on the Merchandising team easier. In her free time, she loves traveling, teaching others to code, and daydreaming about becoming a dog owner.

Besides learning a ton at Wanelo, Julian Fahrer is into climbing, surfing, and leaving the house. He also enjoys staying at home and cooking or playing games. In general—he like doing things.
